Tiny Winged Fairy

Write about what your mother would do if she encountered a tiny winged fairy. This fairy can talk. Most of us can imagine our mom's reactions to everything. That's why having a conversation with mom can be a one-way street, because you can anticipate what she will say.

But instead of thus creating conversation havoc with her, try instead to make it an inspiring and hilarious start to a fairy story.

Normal Language

Write in normal everyday language and repeat every few phrases to sound out the rhythm, on paper. There are some great poems by Gertrude Stein that have this ordinary voice but show interesting replay. Take inspiration from normal conversations and hone it.

Poetry Prompt: Complicated Love

It is too complicated and crowded a field to be writing a poem about love... but it is the crowning glory of human existence and we poets cannot escape going through that over and over, to pen the moments, to exult and despair about the myriad aspects of love. It is fitting to write about love, everyday, even.

So write a poem today about love. The most complicated love you have in your life or had.

Poem About Metaphysical Pondering

Write a poem that paints a mood of metaphysical pondering. It will contrast like a Zen Buddhist koan, but will illuminate the specific of your moment. See if you can capture both, paying attention to the rhythm of the language.

Poem About Color Red

Red can be a Mother's lipstick, annoyingly scratchy holiday sweater, embarrassment. Red is a loud, angry, flushed color... a newborn baby. Red can shiny new helmet, foxy car, or the well-scoured skin of a dishwasher.
Free associate and think about red, while writing without editing for 5 minutes.

Then write a poem about what emerges as the dominant theme. Be bold.
